When was the last time, while playing a game you didn't want to press the "quit" button? And this even if it was late in the night and next day had important things to do. Another level, I have to know what's going to happen next, you know the feeling. This is a feeling you don't experience too often lately, especially if you are a blasA© guy, a long term player. You might prefer to take a nap instead of wasting time with a mediocre game. This is about Call of Juarez. You don't have to understand that it's an exceptional game you don't have to miss. You can still wait for Gothic 3.Though, it has a certain charm that keeps you playing. The game is produced by Techland which is responsible for titles like Xpand Rally, or Chrome. Both games are constructed on an owner engine also used for Call of Juarez.. There are some similitudes between them. Here you can find a lot of the latest technology tricks from HDR to normal mapping, speed tree for trees, shader model 3.0, and the rest of panoply. So many special effects can be annoying sometime. Like Xpand Rally, if you remember. This is the reason why I decided to show it without HDR effect that in COJ brings a lot of glaring colors and a pretty bad over bright effect (like NFS Most Wanted). And so I've chosen a 2.0 shader model, without so called HDR and with a normal lighting. Once you've chosen the type you prefer (many people appreciate HDR from COJ), the game proves to be amazing in patches. The game is high on textures, resolution, characters, but also needs high memory load around 1 Gb ram. Frame rate sucks, having one X1900XTX allows you to run on 25 frames/sec in 1280/1024. So optimization sucks but this game survives threats of low frame rate because is low so you don't need high FPS. In conclusion, with or without HDR, Call of Juarez is one of the best looking games on market and unfortunately, one of the biggest consumer of the system resources.
The story is told from two different point of views: a preacher and a vagabond. Surprisingly, the preacher is the violent character and the vagabond is the sleath one. A weak point of the game is that it combines many game play elements in one character which is able to sneak and shoot, to jump from branch to branch and to split the pound cake. The preacher is a super character. When he preacher talks, he's pretty cool dressed. His face is full of scare faces and wears a conquistador armor under a classic western coat. He can use the bible as a weapon just for fun and he quotes probably the most violent passages. Think Pulp Fiction.
